Hello Geographers!
i) Sugar Shack!! Can you believe it? It's already time to tap the trees and Geography's glorious school bus excursion to the beautiful syrupy countryside will take place Friday March 19th from 6pm to 11:30pm. There will be food, fun and BYOB! Tickets on sale soon. Spots fill fast so stay tuned and get psyched for the event of the year!!!
ii) McGill School of Environment Semi-Formal! You guys could easily have 50 tickets, room capacity is 150 and we've sold about 70 so far. Tickets are 15$ and include one drink and food. Check out the facebook event for more info: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=300013290027&ref=ts
iii) Geography Clothing will be on sale soon, so do not forget to put aside a few dollars of your spring budget! It is time for you -and potentially everyone you know, to represent the department of Geography. MUGS can't wait to show you what we will be offering this year.
iv) Annual Photo Contest!- If you want to flaunt your geography related photography skills, our annual photo contest will be held this semester. The deadline will be in the end of March, so you still have a lot of time to snap the perfect shot. We accept hard copies or digital submissions, and entries can be submitted at coffee and cookies or to mcgillgeography@gmail.com This year's prize is a MYSTERY, so it will be more exciting to win -everyone in the department will be asking about it!
v) MUGS and CAPS are coming together to help you get a job! In late March MUGS will be hosting a CAPS CV workshop where students can drop by and have their CVs reviewed by professionals! If your CV looks good, you look good! MUGS is also working on generating a list of companies who have hired or are interested in hiring geography students and grads (this golden ticket will be handed out during the workshop, so come benefit from our research efforts!). Date and location to be announced....refreshments will be served.
vi) Dobson Cup: Last year's inaugural effort was most successful as 25 groups of over 65 McGill students from the faculties of law, music, engineering, science and management competed in this business plan start-up competition judged by expert entrepreneurs (see Dobson Centre website: www.dobson.mcgill.ca for complete details of last year's winners etc.). Participants will be competing for 5 prizes totaling $15,000 along with the opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of successful judges.
Many of our students, faculty and alumni have the potential and ideas brewing to compete, and would greatly benefit by actually doing so. The Dobson Cup is an iterative process and a growing number of highly experienced serial entrepreneurs will be judges/mentors this year. Details attached.
