Happy New Year MUGS!
Hope the new classes are great and that being back in school already doesn't sting too much...here's some items that hopefully interest you...
i) COFFEE & COOKIES: Every Monday 12:30-1:30 in the lounge on the 3rd floor! This coming Monday's going to be extra great, as there will be even MORE BAKED GOODS and also, since buying textbooks with present money really hurts, we have three gift certificates to the McGill bookstore to give away!
ii) STRATEGIC SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABILITY: Taking place next Friday in the Lev Buhkman Room on the 2nd floor of Shatner, the fun starts at 2:30. The coordinator can explain it much better than me:
Sustainability is big. It's a big ongoing conversation, and hugely multi-faceted. Balancing economic, social, and environmental considerations is the classic core of sustainability. It's about stuff like health and not wasting money, not just recycling and biking. How do we make this community sustainable? How does a student union act to make that happen? How do we do this strategically, without wasted efforts? The answers aren't crystal clear yet, so your input is super-valuable in helping this community to do some really great things! Join the conversation (hosted by SSMU), talk to fellow students & some McGill staff, eat some tasty snacks, and let's get cracking. Send questions & comments to sustainability.coord@ssmu.mcgill.ca<mailto:sustainability.coord@ssmu.mcgill.ca>
iii) REEXAMINING GEOGRAPHY AT MCGILL: Have you heard of a great geography class at another university? Think the department should offer it? Have anything to say about the current selection of classes the department offers? The department is looking to hold a discussion surrounding these topics, so keep an eye out for more information. Also, if you're interested in maybe spearheading the student involvement, contact us at mcgillgeography@gmail.com!
iv) PHOTO OF THE WEEK: The flora of a desert in full bloom!<http://i.imgur.com/bbmAq.jpg>
v) MAP OF THE WEEK: The "Senseable City" Lab at MIT has taken a look at call and text message data and has produced the Connected States of America<http://senseable.mit.edu/csa/visuals.html>!
Hope you're all ready for a great semester, see you on Monday!
All the best,
MUGS
