| | | 1. We're Hiring! The department is hiring a new lecturer for Indigenous Health! Will this lecturer be teaching administrators and other profs?!?!? No! They'll be teaching YOU! Which is why we're calling on you to help in the hiring process. We will be holding three hiring miniforums in the MUGS Lounge, where students are invited to come meet and interview each candidate. They are as follows: Dr. Julia Christensen meets Monday, October 5th, from 3:30 – 4:00 p.m. Dr. Myriam Fillion meets Friday, October 9th, from 2:00 – 2:30 p.m. Dr. Mylene Riva meets Thursday, October 15th, from 2:30 – 3:00 p.m. We encourage you all to have a say in the future and formation of the department! Feel free to email us with any questions. Plus, if you've ever interviewed someone, you'll know how oddly powerful you feel, which is always a welcome ego boost. | | 2. Thanksgiving Chilli Peter, Peter, chilli eater, A power surge broke his heater. Got so chilly, ill he fell. T'was MUGS chilli that made him well. Thursday, October 8th, come to the MUGS Lounge to give thanks for crockpots and NatGeo with your fellow Geographers, all over a steaming bowl of delicious chilli! *Gradeschool crafts and pumpkin juice TBD. | | | 3. Logo Contest Out with the old, in with the new. We're crowdsourcing for a new logo design because you all are so darn creative! If you'd like to take this chance to immortalize your vision of MUGS, please submit your design (as .ai or .tiff) to mcgillgeography@gmail.com by October 31st. The winner will receive a free swag item sporting their design! | | 4. Sustainability Apartment Crawl The School of Environment is holding their first Sustainability Apartment Crawl. Register beforehand and come out October 3rd to show your most creative interpretation of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! | | 7. McGill Alumni Talk Series This talk series has taken it upon themselves to tackle "the future of life." Is the future bleak? Do humans even have a future? These troubling questions and more will be addressed in a seven-week lecture series presenting some of McGill's top scientists in conservation, biology, chemistry, botany, forest ecology, and microbiology. Lectures are held Wednesday evenings from October 7th to November 18th. Registration for the entire series is required, and costs $68.98 for students. For a complete list of speakers and registration, check out the event page. | | 8. Cool Thing of the Week Politics are in the air. In the spirit, we'd like to offer an insider exposé on Justin Trudeau. DID U KNOW JT began a masters at McGill in environmental geography? He attended from 2005 to 2006, but didn't finish his degree. He was too busy getting a tattoo of Planet Earth (inked age 20) inside a Haida raven (inked age 40). If elected, he will become – as far as anyone knows – the first PM with a tat. | | That's all, folks. Happy October, hope to see some smiling people at our chilli-chill-sesh!
