Hello Geographers!

Here is the updated (and correct!) situation with the GIC altered hours of operation. A severe increase
of incidents in the 5th floor library, ranging from coffee spills (on keyboards and computers), stolen
books and maps, to security issues (library staff has been threatened by students during late hours) has
prompted a new system. The Geography department, MUGS, and the library have been in communication on this
issue, and all the changes made are to make sure all of us, the staff, and the library equipment are safe
at late hours, while trying to keep the library as accessible as possible.

1. Regular library hours have been extended as of Monday, thanks to the library covering the costs for
added security. (see exact hours at bottom)

2. Automatic 24/7 access for students enrolled in a course related to classroom BH 511 has been revoked.
(Many of these classes do not require the use of lab equipment/software)

3. In the next few days, personalized 24/7 access will be given back to those students who have a
professor requesting it for them (this should mostly be honors and grad students). Students CANNOT
let others in, the permit is only for them. There should be a reason why a student needs access
beyond the extended opening hours (ie. only small number of students will have access).

4. We are hoping to find a solution for the crunch time at the end of the semester to expand access to
the facilities.

5. A list will be provided of what software is accessible in what other library branches. But ArcGIS is
definitely accessible 24/7 elsewhere (also, students can get 1-year copies for their home computers
from Ruilan). The H- and F-drives are also trying to be made available from remote.

6. Negotiations about earlier Sat/Sun morning are ongoing, but for right now, the library will be
closed before noon.
Please complete our survey for a possible shift in weekend hours http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9LM27FX

This is a compromise that may require some adjustments from students, but it's hopefully to the
benefit of all in the long run (added safety and a proper, secured work environment for all Geography
students, not only those with after hour access).

---> NEW HOURS OF OPERATION: <---

As of February 7, 2011 after-hours access will be replaced with extended study hours (open to all students
with a valid McGill photo ID), overseen by security personnel.

GIC hours for the winter term will be as follows:

Monday - Thursday
Services: 8:30 - 21:00
Extended study hours: 21:00 - 12:45

Friday
Services: 8:30 - 18:00
Extended study hours: 18:00 - 21:45

Saturday - Sunday
Services: 12:00 - 17:00
Extended study hours: 17:00 - 20:45

And there you have it. Please be patient with the changes, and take some time to familiarize yourself with
the new system. If you have further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks!
