Hello Geographers!
Check it out:
i) Geospectives! This Monday (Feb 14) at 11am Prof. Mark Linderman from the University of Iowa
will be presenting "Toward a regional understanding of land use impacts on eco-hydrological
interannual dynamics". Prof Linderman uses advanced remote sensing techniques to investigate
the interactions between human and natural systems, so don't miss out on this cool opportunity!
ii) Have you ordered your geography clothing yet? Deadline to order is next Friday the 18th, and
MUGS will be holding office hours everyday between 12:30 and 2:30 to answer questions and
take orders. Order forms are available in the lounge anytime and of course during office
    hours as well.
iii) Interested in being a part of MUGS? Yes you are! Nomination forms for next year's exec will
be available next week during our office hours (12:30-2:30). Get involved!
iv) The NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) in Universities program is meant to
stimulate interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering, and the pursuit of
research careers in these fields. Recipients engage in a research and development activity
under the supervision of a professor holding an NSERC grant. This is an opportunity to gain
research experience in an academic setting while receiving financial support for summer 2011.
To find out more about this program, go to: http://www.mcgill.ca/science/ours/nserc/
Each Faculty of Science unit has a quota of available awards, and has its own selection
process and deadlines. If your proposed supervisor is in the Department of Geography the
deadline for submission of your complete application is noon, February 21, 2011. Submit your
application and all supporting material to Professor Nigel Roulet. You are required to submit
your most recent transcripts, and you can submit the complete USRA to BH 620 (prf Roulet) or
to one of the staff in the main office (BH 705).
v) Thinking of doing geographical research and need some funding? The Royal Canadian Geographical
Society has funding available to undergrad students for up to $3,000! Deadline for applications
is March 15. For more information, visit the RCGS website: www.rcgs.org or call the Manager of
   Society Programs at (613) 745-4629 ext. 121.
vi) McGill's first annual Sustainability Symposium is in a mere three weeks!! This great event will
take place March 4th, 2011. We welcome faculty, students, alumni and the general public to this
all day event. The symposium will feature inspirational guest speakers, a poster session for
graduate and undergraduate students to showcase current research or class projects, and a
"world-cafe" discussion. The keynote speaker for this event is Jonathan Foley, current director
of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, whose work focuses on the
complex global environmental systems and their interactions with human societies.
Time to register is running out! To register for the event or to learn more about us, please

That's it for now!
Cheers,
