----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey folks,

I'm sorry I clearly fibbed when I told you yesterday's e-mail would be the last you'd get this week...below you'll find a message from our department's Strike Committee, with a message about the strike renewal vote (the motion for which is attached, and it's taking place from now until Sunday afternoon; e-mail geographyelections@gmail.com with your vote [a "YES" vote is to CONTINUE the strike and a "NO" vote is to terminate it...please e-mail from your McGill address, and don't forget to include your name, program details, and student number]!) .

Please keep in mind that it was composed entirely by them and their views do not necessarily represent those of the MUGS Executive committee. Just before we get to it though, I want to correct myself: the voting for co-presidents does not end today! Rather, you can submit votes for upto two of the three candidates until Sunday at 5! Also don't forget about prof. of the year nominations! Take it away Strike Committee...

Dear fellow Geographers,

It is
extremely important that you vote on this mandate for strike renewal.

Education in Quebec today is a public service, open to all who desire to learn and develop their own critical thought. If the government goes through with their new education policy, students risk becoming a reproductive agent of the current social order rather than an active player in the progressive evolution of society. Any tuition fees stratify students by limiting their academic freedom. Due to higher student debt (Yes, it exists here) one may be forced into choosing a program based on economic payoff rather than personal interest or goals of knowledge.

Just as Education succeeded in breaking away from the church and became an inalienable right in society to be sustained by the state without religious affiliation, Education must equally remain separate from the market and commercial sector. We need to prevent Quebec's post-secondary system from turning into the American system, where the role governments play in funding is limited. To receive post-secondary education in the US, ties with the private sector are inevitably formed, either through loans or bursaries, allowing banks and companies to indebt the youth, creating an order ruled by the market.

The bill will force university bodies to up their private donors by 50% in order to create a supposedly "fair" and "balanced" budget. They have two goals in mind: to relieve themselves of managing the education system and to reinvest elsewhere. They also propose that universities further reallocate their own resources. Evidently, this bill argues that "students need to pay their part," by contributing more to the funding of universities so that the government can invest itself in its other priorities such as subsidizing infrastructure for mining companies with its infamous Plan Nord - further promoting Quebec as an amicable place for the world's resource-harvesting multinationals.

Currently, a never-before-seen proportion of university funds are being used to sustain a bureaucracy of executives that are needed to manage universities' multiplying functions that have nothing to do with pedagogy. Observing the National Assembly's files documented last fall will reveal that Heather Munroe-Blum, McGill's Principal, makes a whopping annual salary of $585 481, making her by far the highest paid admin in Quebec. It must be known that Quebec universities do not lack in funds: the money is there, but it is being allocated differently as university operations move away from the traditional pedagogical role to a more corporatist life-form which primarily seeks economic growth.

What does corporate sponsorship mean? As we see in other sectors of society that undergo privatization, corporations gain a significant say in where this money goes, what research is conducted and much more. This commercialized research and education is no longer understood as having its own inherent value, but as merely being of instrumental value. This is where students lose input as to how their school is run and professors have less control over the courses they teach and the research they do. This is where theArts lose ground.

As Geographers, we face a dilemma. We do not study a discipline that seeks profit, but rather a greater understanding of the world around us and solving problems in search of environmental and societal benefit. Aspects of geography that do not immediately seek to gain economic benefits have great potential to be placed to the side if this bill goes through.

A renewed strike mandate would be meaningful beyond the borders of our department. It would add weight to the claims of fellow McGill departments, and to those of approximately 200,000 students throughout Quebec. The repercussions of such a cohesion could have a historical imprint, leading to a more conscientious society where passing on knowledge would be put ahead of seeking short term goals of economic maximization.

The root of an unjust society can be traced to inaccessible education. The ability for some students to attend post-secondary education and the inability for others to do so forms an automatic divide - leading to social stratification and power hierarchy. Clearly, on a global scale, people are unhappy with the current regimes of power put into place and are fighting for their rights by reclaiming the streets and spaces that should belong to the public. Through student mobilization, we can contribute to the reformation of society in one of the most direct manners possible. Through joining thousands of other students, we can witness the creation of accessible education for everyone who chooses to take it.

If Geography votes YES, the Strike Committee will meet (all of you are invited, as always) in order to determine whether to start hard picketing classes, which would essentially freeze the Geography curriculum. The need for collective action and pressure on the McGill administration and government is greater than ever as every next day is worth more than the last.

Send a YES or NO or ABSTENTION to geographyelections@gmail.com<mailto:geographyelections@gmail.com> Voting ends Sunday, April 1st.

Solidarity,

The Geography Strike Committee

|MUGS| Online Strike Vote, GIS Research Assitant Position

12:46:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everybody, last e-mail for this week, I promise!

-First of all, last night's GA unfortunately failed to meet quorum...this means that it has now moved online! So, anytime between now and Saturday at 1pm you can e-mail your vote on the motion to renew the strike (attached to this e-mail) to geographyelections@gmail.com<mailto:geographyelections@gmail.com>. Note that a "YES" vote is a vote in support of the motion, to CONTINUE the strike, while a "NO" vote is a vote against the motion, to END the strike. An "ABSTENTION" indicates that you are unsure of how you feel.

Also, remember that voting for co-presidents and nominations for prof of the year started this morning and last until tomorrow, so in your e-mail (to the same address) you may, in addition to your vote on the motion, also include 2 votes for co-president of MUGS and 1 nomination for prof of the year. ALL E-MAILS MUST BE FROM YOUR MCGILL E-MAIL ADDRESS AND MUST INCLUDE: YOUR FACULTY, PROGRAM, and STUDENT NUMBER.

- Lastly, the Indian Ocean World Centre, based out of McGill, is looking to hire a student familiar with GIS techniques to help them out. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, check out the job description that's attached to this e-mail!

Have a great weekend!

|MUGS| Another GA Tonight and Other News!

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey all,

Unfortunately last night's GA was unable to make quorum (40 people). This means that today there will be another GA at 6 pm in Burnside 708, where, if quorum is reached, there will be a vote on whether or not to continue the general strike for another 5 days. If quorum is again not reached tonight, there will be online voting available from tomorrow to Saturday (voting will be done by e-mailing geographyelections@gmail.com).

Just another reminder, that tomorrow voting for MUGS co-presidents starts as well (lasting until Sunday at 5)...and we're also accepting nominations for Prof of the Year until then as well. So, if necessary (meaning if quorum isn't reached tonight), you'll be able to kill/accidentally injure 3 birds with one e-mail (strike continuation vote, co-president vote, and prof of the year nomination)! Yay for shortcuts...Look out for more info tomorrow!

All the best,
MUGS

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey all,

How about the hot weather joining us on the unlimited strike, eh?! I slay myself...jokes aside, plenty of news this week. Let's get to it:

i) GEO GA TAKE TWO: For a renewal of the strike vote and any other motion that may be presented, we'll be having our second ever General Assembly tomorrow (Tuesday, March 27th) night at 6pm. Once again it'll be taking place in Burnside 708. Come out and voice your opinion!

ii) A MESSAGE FROM THE STRIKE COMMITTEE: A few words from your friendly department strike committee organizers...

Hello Geographers!

This in from tuitiontruth.ca<http://tuitiontruth.ca>
"Over 200,000 students from across Quebec descended on Montreal [Thursday] for a march that stretched for 1.5 km and paralyzed the downtown core for more than 4 hours. In numbers, it was the largest protest in Quebec history and the largest student protest ever in North America. Organizers of the march included CLASSE and the student federations, FEUQ and FECQ. No violence was reported, as riot police kept their distance from the marchers. No arrests have been confirmed.

"The student strike is now the largest in Quebec history, with 308,723 students participating. Close to 200,000 of these have unlimited strike mandates."

So congratulations to all participants!!! We made history!!

As you all hopefully know by now, MUGS is on unlimited general strike as of the 22nd.
There will be a renewal vote tomorrow, 27 March, 6pm, Burnside Hall room 708.
We need you all to be there since this GA will determine whether or not Geography renews its strike mandate, and if it is renewed, whether or not to up the pressure. Quorum is set yet again at 40. Lets surpass that.

As a Strike Committee, we are planning fun, educational activities in support of the student movement. Last week, at our first meeting which everyone was invited to, we decided to use soft tactics of mobilization (pamphlets, class announcements, posters, outings and soft picketing).

Stay tuned for more info, or join us through geog.strikecommittee@gmail.com<mailto:geog.strikecommittee@gmail.com>
or the facebook group (search: Geography Undergrad Strike Committee)

|MUGS| Results from last night's GA, great summer opportunity, and more!

7:25:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone,

I apologize for how late in coming this e-mail is...ideally it should have been out last night, and at least this should have been sent before today's strike committee meeting. Mea culpa!

i) LAST NIGHT'S GA: As you all may have heard by now, last night's General Assembly, the agenda of which is attached, passed a motion to declare a "general strike of indefinite duration"...however, this by no means implies that classes are cancelled (they aren't and will not be) or that students can bar other students from attending classes. That being said, here is the MUGS Executive's official stance on the matter:

Fellow Geographers,

The results from the GA are in. Two motions were passed. The first was in favour of a 1 day boycott of Geography classes on Thursday the 22nd. The motion passed with 33 voting for, 6 voting against and 1 abstention. Although this vote was passed at the meeting, we can now say that it did not meet quorum and therefore is invalid.

The second motion (see attached) that was passed was in favour of an indefinite general strike to begin Thursday the 22nd at 8:00am. This motion is set to be renewed every 5 school days, therefore we will be holding another GA Tuesday March 27th at 6:00pm. The motion passed with 21 voting for, 15 voting against and 7 abstentions. One of these votes has been invalidated but the quorum was still met and therefore, the vote was officially passed.

We recognize that while quorum was met, not all geographers necessarily stand behind the final vote in the GA. We ask that everyone please consider the potential for differing opinions to divide a community, and instead hope we proceed from here with the main goal in mind: education. We need to educate ourselves, and allow others to do the same.

At this time, there are no set parameters for what a strike will entail for Geographers. A strike committee has met tonight in the MUGS lounge to continue this discussion. Everyone is welcome to participate in this discussion. MUGS will also keep you updated as we communicate with faculty and staff in the department to determine how a strike will affect our position as students in the Geography department.
This is the link to the McGill Geography Strike Committee Facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/375421075824341/?notif_t=group_r2j

Class announcements will be made in all Geography classes in order to inform our student body of the vote. In addition, we will send the results out via listserv, Facebook group and posters.

MUGS would like to thank everyone for your participation in the GA. It was a good place to start the discussion of the issues that face us all today. We hope these discussions continue into the future with respectful dialogue.

Finally, if there are any questions, please feel free to email us or post in the Facebook group, as there are probably many others with similar questions or information to share.

Thank you again,

MUGS

Hope to see you all at next week's GA!

ii) SUPER GREAT SUMMER OPPORTUNITY (Application due by Friday): This summer at Georgia State University in Atlanta, we are pleased to host a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site: Addressing Social and Environmental Disparities through Community Geography and Geographic Information Systems. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation. The program runs June 18th – August 2nd.

Research Interests: Working with faculty mentors in one of three research tracks, 10 selected undergraduates will engage in community-based research and fieldwork to quantitatively and qualitatively examine neighborhood change, property markets, air and soil quality, urban green spaces, and neighborhood visioning in partnership with neighborhood residents and community groups.

Compensation: Each REU student will receive a competitive funding package, including: a $3000 stipend, up to $250 in travel support to/from Atlanta, up to $750 for conference presentations, free room and board at GSU, and 3 required texts.

Application Process: Applications are due Friday, March 23rd @ 5 PM EST. Complete application instructions and the application form can be found at http://csaw.gsu.edu/nsf-reu/application-instructions/

To Learn More: Visit http://csaw.gsu.edu/nsf-reu/ or contact Dr. Timothy Hawthorne at thawthorne@gsu.edu<mailto:thawthorne@gsu.edu> or Dr. Katherine Hankins at khankins@gsu.edu<mailto:khankins@gsu.edu>

iii) MUGS ELECTIONS: Get your nomination forms (attached) filled out and submitted to the box in the 3rd floor lounge by this Friday...look for information on campaigning and voting early next week!

iv) MAP OF THE WEEK: Using geographical distribution to understand political events, here's a very timely map of ethnic groups in Syria - http://i.imgur.com/LYLj8.jpg

v) PIC OF THE WEEK: In Chicago, they dye their river green for St. Patrick's day...here's a photo by a man named Seth Oliver http://www.flickr.com/photos/setholiver1/6990381885/lightbox/ . A cool fact about this is that they use green, not orange, dye in order to make it happen!

Have a great rest of your week!

Super sorry about spamming you all, but just a couple of things that need to be cleared up:

i) The meeting today at 5:30 in the 3rd floor lounge is not just to present motions, it'll also be a free-flowing discussion open to all concerning the fact that we're having a General Assembly, and you're all invited!

ii) The nomination form for next year's MUGS positions, was not attached, so here it is!...please hand in a completed one by Friday!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Everybody,

I hope all those who went to Sugar Shack had a blast, and that you're all enjoying this weather as you walk from class to the library and back. This listserve's going out today because of the time-sensitive nature of what it covers. There's a lot going on both in our little department and in the province in general that concerns students, so involve and educate yourself and make your voice heard! Your opinion counts!

i) Special General Assembly: Tomorrow Night at 6, in Burnside 426! For the first time ever, we'll be having our own General Assembly, a collective discussion of issues relevant to us as a department. The assembly will be moderated/facilitated by our faculty reps Matthew and Malcolm, and quorum for it has been set at 40 students, and anyone who is enrolled as either a Geography minor or major is welcome to attend and participate. One of the issues being discussed will be whether to encourage engagement in a one-day boycott of classes this coming Thursday, March 22nd, a date chosen because it is the Provincial "Day of Action" for students protesting tuition hikes. If you have any other motion you'd like to submit for discussion, come by the special consultative meeting this evening at 5:30 in the MUGS lounge! We apologize for the late notice, and we hope you understand if this seems rushed. If other motions are put forward, another e-mail will be sent out tonight detailing them.

ii) MUGS Elections: Mr. Speakers, I'd like to cede my time to Co-Prez Alex Hill and let her take the floor for this one-
