Hey all,

Hope your Reading Week was great. There's a whole ton of stuff to get through this week, but first I just want to let you know that we put a ton of news up on our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/157940771733/) throughout the week. Check it out, and, if you're feeling dangerous, ask to join it! Here goes...

i) LOUNGE RE-OPENING PARTY ON FRIDAY: With delicious food and comfier chairs/couches, the party will be this Friday at 2, and everybody's invited! Hope to see you there!

ii) GEOSPECTIVES TALK TOMORROW: Dr. Jeff Cardille, a Geography professor at UdeM will be giving a talk tomorrow (Wednesday) entitled "Understanding Our Environment Through Computational Landscape Ecology" from 3-4 in Burnside 426.

iii) SUGAR SHACK TICKETS ON SALE NEXT WEEK: Sugar shack is two weeks from this Friday, and we'll be joining Poli Sci, Environment, and others so it should be great. We'll be selling tickets for $15 in the 3rd floor lounge on the 5th, 7th and 9th (next Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) between 11 and 1.

iv) PANAMA FIELD STUDY SEMESTER: Information session on this awesome opportunity during next year's winter semester will take place tomorrow at 5:30 in Burnside 426. You can check out more information on the semester here- http://www.mcgill.ca/pfss/

v) MUGS PHOTO CONTEST: Taken any sweet photos this past year? Like, "contest winning" sweet? Let us decide! Send 'em in to mcgillgeography@gmail.com This year's theme is "FORCES OF NATURE"....so make sure they're FIERCE!

vi) GEOGRAPHY WILDERNESS FIRST AID COURSE: A great program offered next Thursday and Friday (8th and 9th). There'll be an emphasis on Arctic and Temperate river environments. Taught by Sirius Wilderness Medicine (www.siriusmed.com<http://www.siriusmed.com>), this 16 hour course runs 2 days, with 1 evening of CPR and defibrillation, and it includes certification or re-certification of first aid techniques required at some remote field sites. It'll also feature many indoor and outdoor simulations. The cost is $305.36, taxes included, and some research grants may cover the cost for you (ask your supervisor, though). vii) QUALITATIVE SURVEY METHODS QUESTION FROM AN ALUMNUS: Elan, who graduated last year is helping some graduate students at Columbia work on a land tenure survey of Haiti. He would like to tap into our superior geographic knowledge for "some good design methods for structured social surveying"...know any? E-mail him at elan.spitzberg@mail.mcgill.ca!

Happy Almost-Reading-Week Everyone, Just a few pressing things:

i) LAST CHANCE TO BUY GEOGRAPHY CLOTHING: If you would still like to look your best in McGill Geography clothing, you can drop off an order form and cheque/cash tomorrow in the Geo Lounge between 1 and 3! ABSOLUTELY-POSITUTELY-LAST CHANCE!

ii) 3RD FLOOR LOUNGE INFO: As some of you may have noticed, we've gotten rid of a few couches. We promise that this would have never happened if we weren't getting a whole bunch of awesome NEW COUCHES/CHAIRS this week! However, in order to clean the floor and move everything out/in the lounge may be out of commission from tomorrow night to Thursday. But...it's for the best, and, on Monday the 27th we'll be having a Grand re-opening party, to which you're all invited and expected, from 12:00-1:30.

iii) CURLING: Check out the poster that's attached for the 2nd annual ECOSPIEL epic match-up between us and our fiercely hated rivals Environment on Sunday, March 4th. After you check out the poster act on your combined love of curling (or trying new sports), pride for geography, and distaste for all things environment by e-mailing Nigel (at nigel.roulet@mcgill.ca) and joining the team!

Happy February, geogiraffers! First, I encourage you all to go check out the sparkling(?) clean, spiffed up lounge on the third floor, and don't forget about coffee & cookies every Monday at 12:30. Now, let's get down to business:

i) WINE AND CHEESE: It's already this coming WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8TH from 5-7 in Burnside 426! A great chance to meet and discuss both geothings and non-geothings with fellow students and faculty members alike.

ii) CLOTHING: Both the selection and the order forms are attached, and we'll be holding office hours throughout this upcoming week in the lounge so you can bring them in with cheque/cash. Come by anytime between 11-1 (Monday to Wednesday), 1-3 on Thursday, or 11-3 on Friday. E-mail us if you have any questions!

vii) CUBAN FIELDCOURSE: A great sounding opportunity through the Agricultural and Environmental Sciences program taking place in Cuba for two weeks in May! The main focus will be on sustainable agriculture and food security....have to sign up by February 15th.
