2007 Announcement of Opportunity for CGDI User Communities

September 17 – October 12, 2007

GeoConnections is pleased to announce the second round of a new funding opportunity. The program is now soliciting letters of intent for projects that will ultimately account for, build, and draw upon distributed sources of location-based or "geospatial" information over the Internet. Projects will address specific issues within one or more of four priority areas: public health, public safety and security, environment and sustainable development, and matters of importance to Aboriginal people. Projects should assess and make use of the policies, standards, technologies, services, and data sets that comprise the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI), and they should facilitate information sharing in support of decision making. Furthermore, projects funded through this Announcement of Opportunity (AO) will build capacity within user groups, and also promote, expand, and increase the use of the CGDI.

Proposals will be accepted from government departments or agencies (local, provincial/territorial, or federal), Crown corporations, academic institutions, private-sector organizations, non-government organizations, and Aboriginal communities and organizations.

Under this AO, the largest ever offered by GeoConnections, proponents may apply for support in the following areas: strategic planning, capacity building, user needs assessments, thematic data, data standards, regional atlases, and geospatial decision support systems. GeoConnections may support initiatives that consist of related projects in more than one of these areas. Multi-year funding is available.

For more information on this funding opportunity, please see the full AO for < 2007 Announcement of Opportunity for CGDI User Communities >.

Start of the school year listserv! Lockers, Coffee/Cookies, Geospectives, Call for Sustainability Rep.

8:33:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the MUGS Listserv! If you wish to unsubscribe from this listserv, see below for details. For all you new geography students, here is some info to bring you up to speed:

What is MUGS?

MUGS stands for the McGill Undergraduate Geography Society. We serve several roles in the undergraduate realm.

1)      We act as a liason between the administration and undergraduate students.
We represent the undergraduate voice at both the Undergraduate Affairs Committee and at Departmental meetings. MUGS is also a part of the process for selecting new staff. We are a small department, and the Undergraduate voice is well respected. If you have any concerns, please let us know, and we will be able to bring it up at the appropriate committee meetings.

 2) We maintain the MUGS Lounge.
The lounge is the heart of MUGS and the exec tried to keep it that way. For those who haven't visited, the lounge is located on the third floor of Burnside (take a left out of the elevators, then a quick right). Though we do expect everyone to clean up after themselves, the MUGS exec does serious maintenance to the lounge. More often than not we're the ones who mop the floor, do the dishes you forgot and throw out the moldy sandwiches that are left in the fridge. We also make a point to post job info, field course info, professor evaluations and important events on the bulletin boards.

3) We organize social activities for undergraduate geographers
.
We try to provide several social events throughout the semester that allow you to take a break from all that academia, as well as get to know the people you?ll be working and studying with in geography.

4) We are your voice at many other committees at McGill.
We have representatives at both the Science Undergraduate Society (SUS) and Arts Undergraduate Society (AUS). If you have any broader concerns that are appropriate for consideration by AUS or SUS, please let us know, and we will be able to bring it up at the appropriate meeting.

Who is MUGS?

The executive for the 2007-2008 school year looks like this:

Co-Presidents: Sarah Rosenbluth and Isaac Binkovitz

                        VP Finance: Mia Petkova

VP Communications: Phil Potter and Janine Reitsma

                        VP External, AUS: Lesley Raymer

                        VP External, SUS: Leonora King

                        U1 Reps: (pending)

                        U2 Rep: Gaelan Love

                        U3 Rep: Mary Pattison

And more importantly ... MUGS IS YOU! GET INVOLVED!

Info and Upcoming Events

            The Lounge

The MUGS lounge is found on the third floor of Burnside Hall in room 305. It is a huge space with several couches, some basic computers, huge tables for doing homework, and a small informal meeting area. The lounge also has a sink, a microwave, a coffee pot, a kettle and a small fridge for all your lunch making needs.

The lounge is also the place where you can find job postings, information about field courses, book sales, and updates on MUGS events. Lucky for you, MUGS also subscribes to National Geographic, so if you're looking for the newest issue or ones that still list the USSR as a country then you'll be in the right place.

Undergraduates use the lounge for many purposes, from holding meetings to napping, and you'll almost always find a geographer or two hanging out. Sometimes the lounge is locked when no one is around. The code for the lock is available to all Geography major and minor students by contacting MUGS at mcgillgeography@gmail.com

Locker Rentals

Lockers in the Burnside basement are offered free to all geography majors and minors. For other students, the cost is $10 for the year. To sign up for a locker, come by the lounge on the following days this week:

Wednesday 11:30 - 3:30
Thursday 11:30 - 3:30
Friday 11:30 - 3:30

Coffee and Cookies

Every Monday at 1:30, MUGS sponsors a coffee and cookies social where geography students can take a break from classes and socialize with our fellow geographers. Don't forget to stop by the lounge!

****** SPECIAL EVENT THIS WEEK : BOOKSWAP AT COFFEE AND COOKIES ********

Bring in your textbook from a GEOG class you've already taken to arrange a sale, purchase, or trade. A sign-up list will be posted in the lounge to announce books available / needed.

Geospectives

Geospectives is a bi-weekly presentation by a visiting prof / researcher about a topic related to Geography. Coffee and snacks are provided. This week's presentation:

Monitoring St. Lawrence Wetlands : Remote Sensing, Vegetation, and Beyond!

by Guy Letourneau & Martin Jean

from Environment Canada ( www.qc.ec.gc.ca/csl)

3:30 pm Wednesday, Sept 12

Room 306, Burnside Hall

Sustainability Representative

The MUGS council has created a position on council for what we're calling our sustainability rep. Basically, this individual is responsible for monitoring the actions and activities of the council, and looking for ways to make our events/actions more environmentally friendly. The sustainability rep may also be involved in creating new projects, like setting up a system for food waste recycling for the department, etc. Bring your ideas! More to come on the application process ...
