The University flag will be lowered tomorrow, October 31st to commemorate his passing.
A memorial will also be taking place to celebrate Joel's life from 2:00-4:00 pm at Mount Royal Funeral complex in Montreal.

GET PUMPED FOR THE GEOGRAPHY GETAWAY

6:58:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

1)      Geography Getaway Weekend
2)      What do you want to see in the GIC?
3)      Geospectives
4)      Two Workshops for Open Access Week at the Library
5)      McGill Open House
6)      Logo has been chosen!

Hey everyone! Another week has come and gone. I know I'm excited for all the Halloween festivities this weekend, are you? But the main thing I'm excited for is...

1)      THE GEOGRAPHY GETAWAY WEEKEND!

It's the biggest geography event of the semester! Next weekend, we will be riding up to the McGill Outdoors Clubhouse to do some super fun geography related activities, hiking (mapping!) the trails, kayaking, fireside chilling, or just sitting around outdoors drinking beer. Guys, this is an exclusive free-for-all Geography weekend. If you need to do homework, you don't have to do any of the activities that we run. The bus will leave at 6 pm on Friday, November 2nd and we'll be back in town by Sunday at noon.

The trip will cost $30 for Geographers, $50 for non-geographers, and $20 for MOC Members.

This includes:
·         Transportation (Bus)
·         Food
·         Accommodation

MUGS Council will be holding office hours in the lounge every day from 1:00-2:30 to sell tickets.

2)      What do you want to see in the GIC?

The GIC has some fresh new space thanks to the recent organization, and now we're trying to figure out what to do with it! Go to the facebook group and answer our poll so that YOU can decide what we do with this new library space.

3)      Geospectives Seminar

Professor Sebastien Caquard is speaking next Friday, November 2nd. The title of his talk is Mapping Canadian Cinematographic Narratives, and it will be held from 3-4:30pm in Burnside Room 426. I know all you film buffs will be there!

4)      Two Workshops for Open Access Week at the Library

There are two extremely useful library workshops coming up!

Connecting with Reliable, Open Access Health Information on the Web

Do you and your family members have questions about health and wellness? Come to this workshop and learn how to:

·         Find reliable and free online consumer health information to answer your health and wellness questions
·         Assess the information and determine if it will be useful to you, your friends and your family
·         Access a collection of books, available at McGill, written specifically for consumers on health and wellness topics.

For more information and to register, visit:

Open Access Sources: Your Key to Accessing Free and Reliable Research Beyond the University Gates

Are you wondering what will happen after you graduate and you no longer have access to your McGill subscriptions to online research materials? Come to this hands-on workshop and learn how to:

·         Access reliable research once you've graduated from McGill
·         Find and use a variety of Open Access resources that are available for free online

For more information and to register, visit:
http://apps.library.mcgill.ca/workshops-and-tours/view-by-workshop/320
Monday, October 29, 12:00-1:30  |  Redpath eClassroom

5)      McGill Open House this Sunday

If you know anyone in high school or CEGEP considering McGill Geography, come visit us! We will be tabling in both the Arts and Science open houses this Sunday October 28th from 10:00 – 4:00

6)      MUGS Clothing logo has been chosen!

We have finally decided on a logo and it looks fantastic! Congratulations to Natalie Cornish for winning the logo contest. You can see the logo yourself when we start selling the Geography apparel, stay tuned to find out when that is!

7)      Cool Thing of the Week

Here's a twitter map! You can get a live feed of people tweeting anywhere. I always wanted to know if my neighbours used twitter.

GIC Awards, Call for Photo Submissions, and more!

2:57:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

  1. GIC awards
  2. MUGS clothing logo contest deadline extended to Friday
  3. Call out for photo submissions
  4. Cool Geography Thing of the Week

Hey everyone! Hope you're all having great weeks, destroying midterms and getting ready for even better weekends. It's raining right now, but that won't dampen our spirits! Finally, I can stay inside and study all day without feeling bad about how sunny it is outside. I hope all those people on the Ottawa trip are having a good time, maybe it's not raining over there.

1)     1) GIC awards

The GIC is giving awards this year! There are 3 up for grabs; one is ENVI remote sensing software, one is a publishing award of up to $600, and one is the ESRI award. See the attachment for more detail, you need to apply to receive any of these awards.

2)    2)  MUGS clothing logo contest

The logo contest deadline has been extended to Friday, October 19th (today)! If you have any designs bumping around in your head, send them our way by midnight tonight. MUGS council will be voting on your submissions next week, and you will be able to order your clothes very soon, so KEEP CHECKING THOSE EMAILS.

3)     3) Call for Photo Submissions

Do you have a knack for photography? Did you take photos at any MUGS events or on any Geography field trips? The Geography Department is looking for photos to display at McGill's open house on October 28th. If you took any photos on field trips or field semesters, send them to mcgillgeography@gmail.com! Also if you have pictures from last year's events, that would be super.

4) Cool Geography Thing of the week
Have you ever heard the expression "digging to China"? Well, if you ever wondered where that deep hole would really end up, consult the antipode map. You will find the exact opposite end of the world from any point you wish!
www.antipodemap.com
Don't forget you can always submit your own cool geography thing of the week for me to put in the listserv! New ideas are always welcome.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hey guys! Hope you are all having an absolutely fabulous weekend. Autumn Feast yesterday was a huge success, thanks to everyone who came out! We had a lot of fun making hand turkeys and eating chili and pie. But if you think that was the highlight of MUGS events, you are sorely mistaken! Cool Geography Thing of the Week

I stumbled upon (literally, I used StumbleUpon) this website just now. It's got an interactive map. It's fun. Not really sure what to do with it, but I'm gonna play around with it I think.

www.wikimapia.org

Wow, is that it?? That was the shortest listserv ever, I can't believe I procrastinated it until Saturday night. I guess it goes to show me that I shouldn't procrastinate. Be good students, everyone! And see you all at the other side of midterms.

11:59:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

What's happening my straight-up G's? G's as in Geographers, obviously.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and everyone is donning their orange sweaters and eating a sacrificial Thanksgiving beast to honour the people the fought for our country. Or something. Can anybody tell me what Canadian Thanksgiving even is? Anyway it means that there's a long weekend and that's good enough for me.

So as promised, MUGS has some fabulous events coming up which are going to be announced in this very listserv. And a logo design contest for the new MUGS apparel which you can get as a Christmas gift for yourself! Oh my goodness, everything is just happening at once.

1) Field Notes Submission Deadline

2)  LASER Lecture

3) Green Corps: The Field School for Environmental Organizing

4) MUGS Clothing logo design

5)  Autumn Feast

Field Notes Submission Deadline

The Geography journal, Field Notes, is taking submissions up till THIS FRIDAY, October 5th. If you have an A- to A grade original research paper kicking around that you want to have other geographers read, send it in a word document to journal.fieldnotes@gmail.com

LASER Lectures

On Tuesday October 16th, LASER (Laboratoire d'Analyse Spatiale et d'Economie Régionale), will be holding lunch time conferences at the Centre Urbanisation Culture Societe de l'INRS.

In the first meeting, LASER will be presenting their team's work, the tools, the data and geomatic services offered there. You will also get to meet professors Mario Polèse, Marie-Soleil Cloutier, Philippe Apparicio, Gaetan Dussault and Richard Shearmur and hear about their current research topics.

The first conference will be held at 12:15 in room 2109. The Centre Urbanisation Culture Societe is on 385 Sherbrooke Street East, which is on the corner of St. Denis and Sherbrooke.

*** The email that MUGS received about this conference was entirely in French. If you are not fluent in French, attending this conference is not recommended.

Green Corps: The Field School for Environmental Organizing

Okay, now THIS sounds cool! Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day.

In their year-long paid program, you¹ll get intensive training in the skills you¹ll need to make a difference in the world. You¹ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems with groups such as Sierra Club and Food and Water Watch. And, when you graduate from Green Corps, they'll help you find a career with one of the nation¹s leading environmental and social change groups.

Green Corps' year-long program begins in August 2013 with Introductory Classroom Training in Boston, and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

For more information, visit the web site: www.greencorps.org, contact Aaron Myran, Recruitment Director, at jobs@greencorps.org, or email me to look at the full email that was sent to McGill Geography.

MUGS Apparel Logo Design Contest

This year we're updating the logo on our MUGS apparel! If you want to have a say in what goes on this year's MUGS apparel, submit your logo as a PDF or TIF file to mcgillgeography@gmail.com by 5pm on October 17th. MUGS council will decide the winner and you will get bragging rights for an indefinite amount of time!

On that note, MUGS apparel is coming out! Some time after the logo contest, we will have a catalog available in the lounge for you to browse your favourite colours and styles of sweatshirts, t-shirts, TOQUES, and all that good stuff.

Autumn Feast!

If you thought that all the good food, pumpkin pie, and festivity would be lost after Thanksgiving, you're sorely mistaken. The Friday after Thanksgiving weekend, that is, October 12th, we will be having a fabulous Autumn Feast in the MUGS lounge starting at 1:30. The event is potluck so you will get to share food with your fellow geographers and participate in some super-duper activities. Check out the facebook group for more info.
