Hello again geographers!

A couple of quick things to add to this week's listserv!

i) The McGill Sustainability Symposium is an initiative that convenes faculty, students, and global academic leaders for a discussion of current research in the field of sustainability. The University's first edition in 2011 was a success and we are currently seeking undergraduate students to fill this year's coordinating team. The position will involve a variety of planning tasks and has the potential to be paid. If you are interested in learning more about the project, please contact Camille Ouellet Dallaire and Sarah Wilson at camille.ouelletdallaire@mail.mcgill.ca<mailto:camille.ouelletdallaire@mail.mcgill.ca> and sarah.wilson@mail.mcgill.ca<mailto:sarah.wilson@mail.mcgill.ca>. We thank you for your interest! For more information about the symposium and last year's edition, check our website at www.mcgillsustainabilitysymposium.wordpress.com<http://www.mcgillsustainablitysymposium.wordpress.com/>.
From MUGS --> This was tons of fun and very interesting, to both attend and be a part of, so if you're at all interested, send them an email!

ii) Be sure to check out the SUS GRAD FAIR on November 2nd, held in the Shatner Ballroom. See http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com for more details!

cheers,

MUGS

Hellooo geographers!

Midterm season is upon us, but take some time out of your hectic schedules to relax and check out these fun upcoming events and opportunities!

i) GREAT GUEST LECTURE: This WEDNESDAY October 26th at 4:30pm, join us in Burnside 306 for a lecture by Dr. Curt Richardson from Duke University. Entitled "Searching for the Garden of Eden: An Ecologist's Journey into Environmental Genocide in the Mesopotamian Marshes of Iraq", Dr. Richardson will lead a lively talk and discussion about the destruction of these important marshes which were once the largest wetlands in southwest Asia (covering an area nearly twice the size of the original Everglades!). Check out the blurb attached above for more info!

ii) APARTMENT CRAWL through the biomes!!: What could be better than partying your way through the Savanna, the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic AND the Jungle all in one night?! (this means costumes, people!) Get ready, geographers, for the beloved Geography Apartment Crawl!! The big day is FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4th! We will meet in the lounge (Burnside 305) from 6:30 - 7 for sign-in and pizza, and then will head out on our adventure at 7 PM SHARP! Non-alcoholic drinks and munchies will also be served at each location!
TICKETS - on sale for $10 (or $12.50 with a transit ticket) in the lounge at the following times:
Monday, October 24th: 12 – 1, Wednesday October 26th: 5 - 5:30, Monday October 31st - Friday November 4th: 11 - 1
** Tickets will only be available for geography students (majors/minors) first, and will later be opened to other departments if there are still available tickets in the last couple of days. We will keep you updated!

iii) FIELD RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY: A great internship position has opened at the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada and Uganda. The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is undertaking a "Sustainable Livelihoods Project" in Uganda, which aims to improve the health, well-being and livelihoods of local people, while simultaneously conserving and restoring habitat for wild chimpanzee populations. JGI is looking for students to conduct research in the field, to monitor and assess the immediate and long-term impacts of the project, on local communities and the environment. Check out the attachment above for more info!

iv) GIS DAY: Mark your calendars- WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16th from 2:30pm - 5:30pm, join us in celebrating GIS day! MUGS will be hosting some GIS experts from McGill and beyond, who will be giving presentations about how they use GIS for their studies/jobs etc. This is a great way to see how YOU could become involved with GIS work, how you can incorporate it into your studies or job, or just for you to socialize with geographers and learn something new!
There will be a mini-reception after with sweet and savoury treats from Organic Campus (gotta love that sweet potato cinnamon bread) as well as an opportunity to enter a draw and win some ESRI swag. Thanks ESRI!
Finally, there will be a GIS challenge for those who are just SUPER into GIS! More details TBA, but get a team of 2+ together if you're interested, no need to sign up yet! All proceeds from the day will go towards the winner's charity of choice!

v) SUSTAINABILITY: The Sustainability Case Competition is now accepting applications! Would you like to have the chance to design the next sustainable student-run cafe on campus? To network with other passionate students, sustainable leaders at McGill and industry professionals? To win a team prize of $6,000? Then check out the Inter-Faculty Case Competition in Sustainability. More information and applications on www.ssmucasecomp.com. Apply by November 4th!

vi) INTERNSHIPS: Interested in an internship for summer 2012? Come to the 2011 Annual McGill Internship Information Session, THURSDAY NOVEMBER 3rd from 5pm to 6pm in Leacock 232. The annual event for the Internship Offices Network gives students an overview of the diverse internship opportunities offered by McGill, both on campus, in Montreal, and internationally. Come listen to a panel presentation on current internship opportunities, as well as hear from past interns about their experiences. More information on the internships that will be presented can be found here. Pizza will be served!

That's it for now!

cheers,

MUGS

This week's listserv courtesy of my new VP Communications partner in crime, Josh Fagen! read on!

Howdy Geographers!
Hope the Turkey hangover isn't too bad, here's some news and upcoming events:

i) RECEPTION FOR MCGILL ALUMNUS: This Thursday, from 2:30-3:30 the McGill Geography department is hosting a reception for Alan Hart, a McGill Grad of 1974 who is now a director of the VIA architecture firm (www.via-architecture.com<http://www.via-architecture.com<UrlBlockedError.aspx>>) in Vancouver and Seattle. The reception will be in Burnside 426, and should be quite interesting for any and all of you interested in things such as sustainable architecture, infrastructure development, etc. Check it out!

ii) HARVEST CHALLENGE: The red and yellow leaves outside mean Harvest Challenge is coming up! Get ready to have your stomachs filled with home-made pies, apple cider, apple sauce, and candy. The interestingly-named Apple Dangle, a game in which you try grabbing an apple in your mouth while it is dangling from the ceiling, will be back this year. And who would want to miss pumpkin carving, face-painting, AND face-in-hole fun, where you could become a turkey or a pumpkin! Everyone's invited to come celebrate autumn with us in the Geo lounge at noon on October 17.

iii) LOUNGE CLEANING: This Friday afternoon, the MUGS lounge on the 3rd floor of Burnside is getting CLEANED, come and help make it spick-and-span!

iv) CHILI AND FRISBEE!!: Thanks to all those who indulged in the delicious chilli...hopefully next year we can have some Frisbee too! A BIG shout out to Dan and co. for cooking the delicious chilli.

v) UPCOMING MUGS/McGill Geography EVENTS: Start getting pumped—Dr. Curt Richardson from Duke University will be giving two lectures at McGill, on Wednesday, October 26th and Friday, October 28th; our awesome Apartment Crawl is officially going to be the first Friday in November (watch out for ticket selling info!); and GIS day'll be November 16th. Keep your eyes and ears open for more info soon!

vi) LOCKERS: Lockers from last year that have not been renewed and still had a lock on them have now been CUT. If your locker is one of these, your belongings are now available to be picked up in the MUGS Lounge, Burnside rm 305. If an executive is not around, feel free to email mcgillgeography@gmail.com<mailto:mcgillgeography@gmail.com> to make an appointment.

vii) AWESOME GEOG BLOG: Don't forget to check out our great new geography blog at mcgillgeography.blogspot.com It's got tons of great links and info like MUGS updates, job postings, special events, and photos!
