Hello Geographers!
This one's quick- check it out:

i) TOMORROW: There's a cool event tomorrow over lunch time (April 1st, 12pm to 1:30pm) organized for international "Fossil Fools" day: the launching of the 2011 "Défi Climat" campaign at McGill ("Show us the Plan!"), with a presentation by McGill's Energy Manager Jerome Conraud (Eng. M.Sc.).

What is "Défi Climat" you may ask?
-The largest GHG reductions and climate awareness campaign in Quebec
-Défi Climat proposes a list of actions which individuals can commit to through an online

registration process during the month-long campaign : http://www.deficlimat.qc.ca/deficlimat2011/register.php

- This year Defi Climat also proposes actions at the institutional level: http://www.deficlimat.qc.ca/deficlimat2011/en/Your-Organizations-Actions-and-Resources

Thus the presentation and workshop tomorrow (April 1st, 12-1h30pm) will focus on institutional commitments and challenges at McGill for GHG reductions: a progress report on its long-term energy and GHG action plan, addressing issues of monitoring, targets, investments, and community engagement. SSMU and PGSS will also give short presentations.

Location and time: Wong bldg. 1050, 12-1h30pm

Light refreshments will be served.

ii) SCIENCE TEC: The Science Technology Entrepreneurship Club is inviting all interested science students to their next meeting, Thursday April 7, from 2-4pm at Thomson House. The discussion will focus on actions to better encourage tech entrepreneurship. Check out the attached poster above!

iii) Are you interested in renewable energy, wind turbines, environmetnal issues, development projects or simply volunteering your time to make a real difference in the world? Then volunteering with WindAid could the perfect experience for you. WindAid is a non-profit social responsibility organization based in Trujillo, Peru and we run environmental development projects building wind turbines for communities in Peru without access to electricity.

As a volunteer on one of our projects, you will be involved in building a wind turbine from scratch and then spend the final week of the program living with the community while you install the wind turbine. The program offers the opportunity to get involved in hands-on engineering, learn more about wind energy and international development projects or just experience life in another country. Volunteers do not need any previous skills, just an interest and enthusiasm for renewable energy or a desire to make a difference to the environment. The dates for our upcoming programs are: 6th June - 8th July 2011, 26th September - 28th October 2011, 7th November - 9th December 2011, 30th January - 2nd March 2012, 26th March - 27th April 2012

Each program is limited to 8 volunteers and places do fill quickly so if you are interested then contact us as soon as possible. Details of the cost (in US$) and what is and isn't included can be found here (http://windaid.org/datesandcost.html). For more information please visit our website (www.windaid.org) or Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/pages/VolunteerWindAid/373332947000) and take a look at photos of our past projects. Attached is a blog from one of our volunteers about his volunteering experience. We look forward to hearing from you soon and hopefully seeing you in Peru in the near future. If you have any questions please contact me and I would be happy to help.

Kind regards,

James Low, Director de RR.SS.

That's all for now!

Cheers,

MUGS
