Hey Geographers!

Wow, I guess time flies when you’re having fun. This whole year, my final year at McGill, it hasn’t really hit me that I will be leaving this place. Until now: one day before the end of year party, one week before the last day of classes, three weeks before my last exam, I realize that I will never again have the pleasure of writing these listservs. I loved getting feedback from you all about my writing, things I may have missed or left out, and what you enjoyed about the listserv.

If you enjoyed my writing and want to continue reading it, you can follow my blog! (Wow, shameless plug much?) I will soon include other things such as product reviews and experimental prose. If you have something you want me to write about on the blog, feel free to get in touch! The blog link will be at the end of the listserv.

Have a wonderful exam period, everyone!

Image processing for visual cultural heritage preservation
Dr. Rachid Hedjam
Post-Doctoral Fellow
Department of Geography
McGill University

Recently, significant human efforts have been focused on the preservation and restoration of visual cultural heritage using signal processing and imaging technologies. Advanced progresses in this area allow us to dig into the memory of our heritage by computer-based techniques to understand its evolution over the years. Historical geographic maps and manuscripts are among the very important visual elements of our cultural heritage that need to be digitized in the form of digital images and then analyzed using image processing tools in order to automatically explore, recognize and understand their contents. Our aim is to develop advanced techniques of image processing to help scholars in their investigation of historical maps and manuscripts images.

Documentaries at Redpath Museum

Don’t you love primates? Come to Redpath this Sunday, April 6 at 3pm to watch Chimpanzee (Disney Nature, 2011). Journey deep into the African rainforest and meet Oscar, an adorable young chimp with an entertaining approach to life, and a remarkable story of individual triumph and family bonds. The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimps who love creating mayhem. Full of curiosity, a zest for discovery, joy and a love for mimicking others, Oscar -- and his family -- navigate navigate the complex territory of the forest. It's an inspiring and life-changing adventure, narrated by Tim Allen, that overflows with courage and charm that will capture your heart.

Totally suitable for families and young children. I know I will be looking for a small child to bring!
