Happy Thursday, Geographers! I hope you all are having wonderful weeks, enjoying the brief semi-thaw of temperatures between 0 and -10 degrees. It’s downright balmy, if you ask me.

Obviously everyone is super stoked for Montreal Poutine Week, but that’s not what I’m going to write about in this week’s listserv! There are lots of other cool things going on around this great school of ours. Also, speaking of Quebec food, get stoked for our annual sugar shack trip! It’s happening in late March – but you better be there!

Ecospiel!

It’s not too late to sign up for the most epic interdepartmental curling match of your life!

The McGill Farmers’ Market is hiring!

Interested in helping to organize the 2014-2015 Farmers’ Market and CSA Program?

We're looking for passionate and committed members of the McGill community who want to help prepare next year's market! We are hiring for 4 coordinator positions: two (2) co-coordinators, one (1) promotions & outreach coordinator, and one (1) finance coordinator. All backgrounds and levels of involvement are welcome. Candidates must be available April 2014 - May 2015. For more information on the application process and job specifics, visit www.mcgillfarmersmarket.ca.

Fieldwork in Photos Series

Ever wonder what researchers mean when they say they are going to the "FIELD"?  What actually happens while they are there? And what stories don't make it into the publications?

Well the Geography graduate students are excited to present a new brown bag lunch series: "Fieldwork in Photos". This will be an informal series of talks by graduate students focusing on imagery and storytelling from their experiences in the field. The idea is to give insight into what geographers actually do, demystify the fieldwork experience and hopefully laugh a lot.

This week we are excited to have Michael Becker present on "Where the wild things are: Camping in the Arctic and the Antarctic" Talks will be held every Friday this semester in Burnside Hall room 426 from 12-1pm ...so bring your lunch! Come learn how to survive in those forbidden ice-scapes!

Science and Democracy: The E4D Experiment

Friday, February 7, 2014 3-4 pm Rm N2/2, Stewart Biology Bldg, 1205 Dr. Penfield Ave, McGill University

There have been drastic changes to science in Canada in recent years, summarized in three distinct ways: 1) reducing the ability of government scientists to communicate their research to the public, 2) eroding Canada's science capacity, and 3) reducing the role of evidence in policy decisions.  Since science and evidence are essential elements of a functioning democracy, the impacts of these changes reach far and wide. Concerns about the status of science in Canada have led to a more vocal scientific community and the formation of Evidence for Democracy (E4D), a new science-led, national, non-partisan, non-profit organization advocating for science and evidence-based policies in Canada.

Join us to hear Dr. Katie Gibbs, Executive Director of Evidence for Democracy and lead organizer of the 2012 Death of Evidence rally, analyze recent changes to science in Canada and describe how scientists and citizens are responding.  Discussions will follow at Thomson House (3650 rue McTavish). https://www.facebook.com/events/1523964304495297/

Documentary screenings in Redpath Museum!

At 3pm on both February 2nd and February 9th, documentary films will be screened in room 200 of Redpath Museum! The first one will be Family Portrait in Black and White (2012). This documentary follows an Iranian woman who fosters many children, many of which are black.  The woman is very interesting and it is difficult to tell whether she is exploitative of the children, or supportive.  This film won the audience award at the Hotdocs 2013 festival in Toronto. Come and enjoy for FREE!!!

Opportunity for student groups with a sustainability focus

There will be a Sustainability Fair during the Desautels Business Conference on Sustainability (DBCS) on Saturday, February 8th from 12-1pm where any student group from McGill with a sustainability focus can table and present what they do. This will be a great way to get some exposure to the McGill community and network with likeminded individuals.

Student groups who participate will be eligible to receive discounted ticket packages to the conference.

Please contact mus.sustainability.network@gmail.com if you are interested or to receive more information.

Mining-Community Conflict in Canada

Dr. Jan de Bakker

BBA, Inc (Consulting Engineering)

My talk will explore the causes of conflict between mines and communities by looking at three case studies. I will give an introduction to financial, property, and legal issues surrounding claim staking, exploration, and mine exploitation. I will then discuss three case studies of interactions between mining operations and surrounding communities in Canada. These include: the Raglan mine/Kangiqsujuaq and Salluit, Nunavik; the Canadian Malartic mine/Malartic, Quebec; and the proposed Cliffs Chromite project/Ojibway and Cree communities in Northern Ontario. Problems and possible solutions will be explored for each case study.

Subscription probe for MUGS - please ignore

6:00:00 am McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

Wed, 15 Jan 2014 06:00:46

This message is a "probe" for your subscription to the MUGS list. You do
not need to take any action to remain subscribed to the list, and in
particular you should not reply to this message. Simply discard it now,
or read on if you would like to know more about how this probing
mechanism works.

A "probe" is a message like the one you are reading, sent to an
individual subscriber and tagged with a special signature to uniquely
identify this particular subscriber (you can probably not see the
signature because it is in the mail headers). If the subscriber's e-mail
address is no longer valid, the message will be returned to LISTSERV and
the faulty address will be removed from the list. If the subscriber's
address is still valid, the message will not bounce and the user will not
be deleted.

The main advantage of this technique is that it can be fully automated;
the list owner does not need to read a single delivery error. For a large
or active list, the manpower savings can be tremendous. In fact, some
lists are so large that it is virtually impossible to process delivery
errors manually. Another advantage is that the special, unique signatures
make it possible to accurately process delivery errors that are otherwise
unintelligible, even to an experienced technical person.

The drawback, however, is that this method lacks flexibility and
forgiveness. Since the Internet does not provide a reliable mechanism for
probing an e-mail address without actually delivering a message to the
human recipient, the subscribers need to be inconvenienced with yet
another "junk message." And, unlike a human list owner, LISTSERV follows
a number of simple rules in determining when and whether to terminate a
subscription. In particular, a common problem with automatic probes is
mail gateways that return a delivery error, but do deliver the message
anyway. LISTSERV has no way to know that the message was in fact
delivered, and in most cases the subscriber is not aware of the existence
of these "false" error reports. If this happens to you, LISTSERV will
send you another message with a copy of the delivery error returned by
your mail system, so that you can show it to your technical people.
