Hey Geographers! I hope everyone is having a good spring holiday season, whether you're gearing up for Easter or recovering from Passover. The four day weekend is nice, too. To kick off the Easter weekend we have a wine and cheese tomorrow that is actually not for Easter at all but in fact for the Field Notes Journal! More info below.

Full-time summer internship at Transportation Research at McGill (May 1st – July 31st):

This three-month position is open to a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student from McGill.

Strong quantitative and communication skills are a must, and fluency in French is recommended. In addition, the successful candidate should have the desire to work collaboratively in a lively team environment.  Research interests should include one of the following areas:
  • Transportation and Land use planning
  • Public transit
  • Bicycling and pedestrian research
Tasks will include data cleaning and analysis of the McGill travel survey, managing and updating the GIS TRAM data archive, and assisting graduate research assistants on conducting various surveys and tasks. All applicants should have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

If you want to apply for the Editor-in-Chief position, please send your resume along with a short (no longer than 350 words) essay to mcgillgeography@gmail.com.

The essay should include:

1) Previous editorial, leadership, and organizational experience

2) Why is an undergraduate journal important for the department?

The top 3 applicants will be invited for interviews.

New Post-Graduate Programs Offered at McGill

A 1-year Master of Science in Integrated Water Resources Management (Non-Thesis):

Providing a unique opportunity to study the biophysical, environmental, legal, institutional, and socio-economic aspects of water use and management in an integrated context. This program promotes a holistic perspective and awareness of water resources management issues through a wide range of courses offered by collaborating departments and faculties at McGill University. Candidates may have undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of related areas, including: geography, international development studies, sociology, anthropology, mathematics, environmental studies, biology, natural resources management, and engineering amongst others.

An 8-week online certification program in Integrated and Adaptive Water Resources Planning, Management & Governance:

Taking a holistic look at water resources management with a specific focus on integrated water resources management (IWRM) and adaptive water management. It is designed specifically for professionals who want to upgrade their skills in water management concepts and practices, and aims to provide tools and training for watershed planning techniques, adaptive management strategies, capacity building approaches, water governance, and water risk assessment to strengthen IWRM capacities globally. Participants with diverse disciplinary backgrounds (e.g., geography, engineering, social sciences, business, etc.) are welcomed and encouraged to apply.

Green Corps - The Field School for Environmental Organizing

Spring Applications due by Saturday, March 23

In Green Corps' year-long paid program, you'll get intensive training in the skills you'll need to make a difference in the world. You'll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — global warming, deforestation, water pollution and many others — with groups such as Sierra Club and Food and Water Watch. Green Corps Organizers earn a salary of $23,750. Organizers also have a chance to opt into our health care program with a pre-tax monthly salary deferral. We offer paid sick days and holidays, two weeks paid vacation and a student loan repayment program for those who qualify. There are spots for 35 college graduates for  2013-2014.

The Cabane a Sucre is a unique Quebec experience found nowhere else on earth. Come see how real Canadian maple syrup is made, sample the delicious traditional cuisine, and have a romping good time dancing and drinking beer! We will be collaborating with Environment and the Geography Grad students (mentors and mentees, this is a great way to get to know each other in a more intimate setting). We'll be selling tickets during office hours which will be every day from 11:30-1 unless otherwise specified on the facebook group!

Earth System Science Seminar

The second McGill earth system science seminar will take place this Tuesday, March 19th in the Redpath Museum Auditorium! Dr. Christopher Kennedy from University of Toronto will be speaking, his topic is "The Global Impacts of Cities". Hope to see you all there!


World Wildlife Fund Internships Available

There's a whole slew of Internships available at the United States World Wildlife Fund (WWF). They are typically designed for grad students but some may be appropriate for undergrads. The internships are typically unpaid. To qualify for an unpaid internship, the student must provide documentation that they are receiving credit from their university, or that the work they will be performing is consistent with a course requirement. All the positions are described in greater detail in the attached word document.


Part Time Lab Job

There's a cool part-time job opportunity available for undergrads with Elena Bennet's lab on ecosystem services. Student ambassadors will be expected to work 3-5 hours per week during the semester at $10-12 per hour. Start date will be as soon as possible, with the possibility of continuing to full-time work during the summer of 2013.
