Hey Geographers!

Once again I find it's Thursday night and I forgot to prepare the listserv earlier in the week. AGAIN. I don't even have my birthday as an excuse this time.

Fall is in the air and that means that there are lots of cool events being planned by your tireless MUGS council! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more info. For now just continue the countdown until Thanksgiving.

Field Notes Call for Submission

Don't forget that the Geography journal, Field Notes, is still looking for submissions! They have even pushed back the deadline to October 5th, so you really have no excuse.

Please send your submissions in a Word document to journal.fieldnotes@gmail.com

Lockers

Oh my goodness I will be so happy when I can write a listserv without mentioning these stupid lockers! Locker rental is now closed. If you did not renew your locker and your lock got cut, please come pick up your stuff in Burnside 305, AKA the MUGS lounge.

National Geographic Workshop

This weekend the National Geographic Society is holding a workshop at McGill to recruit applicants for their "Young Explorers Grant" (up to $5000, age 18-25). There will be a free daytime workshop to learn about the application procedure and hear from past Young Explorer recipients and a free evening lecture by National Geographic Explorers Kenny Broad and Conrad Anker.

9:45 am - 3 pm (includes breakfast and lunch!)
McGill University, Leacock Building, Rm 132

Conservation Research Opportunities Presentation

A representative from the prestigious academic network Operation Wallacea, Dr. Justin Hines, will be visiting McGill University this Monday, Oct 1 at 1:30pm in Brown Building 5001 (Downtown campus) and at 4:30pm in the Faculty Lounge MS2-022 (Macdonald campus) as part of the network's Across-Canada tour. This is an opportunity to learn how Operation Wallacea can provide all those things geography students love; students can join the program to strengthen their CV or resume, gain course credit, or collect data for a dissertation or thesis. Academics benefit from funding for high quality fieldwork enabling them to publish papers in peer reviewed journals.

Community Engagement Day

Register now for McGill's first-ever Community Engagement Day, this Friday, October 5th!

Community Engagement Day is a new project from the SEDE Office, SSMU, the SPF and many other partners that aims to celebrate and promote existing initiatives that connect McGill with the Montreal community, while building new relationships.

Watch the video:

A REALLY COOL THING – ACTUALLY GEOGRAPHY RELATED THIS TIME

I found a map which has beautiful photos from all around the world! It's not perfect – there's a picture of the London Eye in the China link, though maybe the uploader had an IP address in China or something, but some of these photos are stunning.

*** mcgillgeography@gmail.com *** http://mcgillgeography.blogspot.com ****

Hey geographers!

My name is Julia, and this is my very first listserv of the new school year. How exciting!

As well as a new council, we have many new students entering the department. Therefore, we are having our Geography Orientation TOMORROW Friday, September 7th at 2pm. All new geographers (U1s, urbaners, SSS, transfers, either majors or minors) are invited to attend. There you'll get a chance to meet other new geographers and the MUGS exec, learn about geography field courses, and the stream options available to you in Geography. Immediately following the orientation join in an epic round of geocaching and get a secret prize. Snacks will be provided!

U1 REP AND SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER POSITIONS –

Are you interested in getting involved in MUGS this year? We're looking for 1 – 2 U1 reps (only U1s may run for this position) and 1 – 2 sustainability officers (open to geog undergrad!) to sit on MUGS council for the year. Position info and application forms are attached, and must be submitted by Friday September 14th, 2012.

GEOSPECTIVES SEMINAR SERIES

The Department of Geography is happy to announce that we are kicking off the fall semester with an exciting series of talks as part of this year's GeoSpectives Seminar Series, a ~bi-weekly lecture series hosted by the Department of Geography.

This semester GeoSpectives talks will take place on Friday afternoons from 3:00-4:30pm in Burnside Hall room 426. Attached is the schedule. We will be sending out reminders for upcoming talks throughout the semester.

Our first GeoSpectives will take place next Friday Sept 14th @ 3pm in Burnside Hall rm 426 by Dr. Ashlee Cunsolo Willox on:

Climate Change and Inuit Mental Health: Local Voices, Global Implications

Anthropogenic climate change has become an increasing international concern, as peoples globally are already experiencing dramatic shifts in weather, climate, and environment. These changes are adversely impacting human health, with some scholars identifying climate change as the most significant threat to global health of the 21st Century. Emerging research indicates that climate change, and the resulting environmental alterations, also pose serious challenges for mental health and well-being, particularly among resource-dependent regions, those living in rural, remote, or ecologically-sensitive areas, and Indigenous populations. Drawing on data from community-led research conducted in the Inuit community of Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, Labrador, this presentation will describe the pathways through which residents reported that climate change was negatively impacting mental health and health systems in the region, and highlight the need to work collaboratively with communities and regions to define research priorities, develop locally-appropriate mental health services, and design culturally-relevant adaptation strategies.

Hope to see you all there!

Ben & Sylvia
