---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Geographers!
This one's quick- check it out:

i) TOMORROW: There's a cool event tomorrow over lunch time (April 1st, 12pm to 1:30pm) organized for international "Fossil Fools" day: the launching of the 2011 "Défi Climat" campaign at McGill ("Show us the Plan!"), with a presentation by McGill's Energy Manager Jerome Conraud (Eng. M.Sc.).

What is "Défi Climat" you may ask?
-The largest GHG reductions and climate awareness campaign in Quebec
-Défi Climat proposes a list of actions which individuals can commit to through an online

registration process during the month-long campaign : http://www.deficlimat.qc.ca/deficlimat2011/register.php

- This year Defi Climat also proposes actions at the institutional level: http://www.deficlimat.qc.ca/deficlimat2011/en/Your-Organizations-Actions-and-Resources

Thus the presentation and workshop tomorrow (April 1st, 12-1h30pm) will focus on institutional commitments and challenges at McGill for GHG reductions: a progress report on its long-term energy and GHG action plan, addressing issues of monitoring, targets, investments, and community engagement. SSMU and PGSS will also give short presentations.

Location and time: Wong bldg. 1050, 12-1h30pm

Light refreshments will be served.

ii) SCIENCE TEC: The Science Technology Entrepreneurship Club is inviting all interested science students to their next meeting, Thursday April 7, from 2-4pm at Thomson House. The discussion will focus on actions to better encourage tech entrepreneurship. Check out the attached poster above!

iii) Are you interested in renewable energy, wind turbines, environmetnal issues, development projects or simply volunteering your time to make a real difference in the world? Then volunteering with WindAid could the perfect experience for you. WindAid is a non-profit social responsibility organization based in Trujillo, Peru and we run environmental development projects building wind turbines for communities in Peru without access to electricity.

As a volunteer on one of our projects, you will be involved in building a wind turbine from scratch and then spend the final week of the program living with the community while you install the wind turbine. The program offers the opportunity to get involved in hands-on engineering, learn more about wind energy and international development projects or just experience life in another country. Volunteers do not need any previous skills, just an interest and enthusiasm for renewable energy or a desire to make a difference to the environment. The dates for our upcoming programs are: 6th June - 8th July 2011, 26th September - 28th October 2011, 7th November - 9th December 2011, 30th January - 2nd March 2012, 26th March - 27th April 2012

Each program is limited to 8 volunteers and places do fill quickly so if you are interested then contact us as soon as possible. Details of the cost (in US$) and what is and isn't included can be found here (http://windaid.org/datesandcost.html). For more information please visit our website (www.windaid.org) or Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/pages/VolunteerWindAid/373332947000) and take a look at photos of our past projects. Attached is a blog from one of our volunteers about his volunteering experience. We look forward to hearing from you soon and hopefully seeing you in Peru in the near future. If you have any questions please contact me and I would be happy to help.

Kind regards,

James Low, Director de RR.SS.

That's all for now!

Cheers,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Geographers!
Buckle up- this edition is good and long (but obviously awesome).. READ IT :)

i) ELECTIONS! We have two candidates running for our AUS representative position on the MUGS council next year: Malcolm Araos Egan and Stefan Chen. The AUS Representative reps MUGS to the Arts Undergraduate Society meetings, and relays information back to the council. They will head up interdepartmental communication and coordinate efforts with other Arts departments.
Campaigning begins TODAY and runs until Wednesday, please disregard anything done prior to this. As geographers, you have a say in who your representative will be, so check it out: read their blurbs at the end of this email, check out their posters around Burnside, and then vote for your preferred candidate at mcgillgeography@gmail.com (with "vote" in the subject line). Voting ends next Wednesday April 6th.

ii) HONOURS PRESENTATIONS: From 10 AM to 5 PM on Thursday March 31 and Friday April 1 in room 308, come check out what your fellow students have been up to!
In response to popular demand, I have attached the schedule for the Honours Poster Presentations. As we have such a large group, students will be in room 308 at different times on Thursday and Friday to present their posters. All posters should be up and available for viewing as of 10 AM Thursday. If you are interested in a particular research project, it would be best to contact the student directly to make sure they will be there when you stop by.

iii) SUSTAINABLE FOOD TALK: The PGSS environment committee is proud to present another Green Drinks Montreal event TOMORROW Tuesday, March 29 in the Thomson House restaurant. There will be a mix starting at 5 PM, followed at 6 PM by a presentation by Laura Rhodes who is Food Systems Administrator in the McGill Food and Dining Services unit. She will talk on "Seeding Sustainable Food Systems." Her presentation will be followed by a World Cafe Style Discussion.

iv) PHOTO CONTEST/PROF OF YEAR: voting ends this Wednesday, email your votes to mcgillgeography@gmail.com with either "prof" or "photo contest" in the subject line. The photos can be found at http://mugsphotocontest.wordpress.com/. The winners will be announced at our end of year pizza party this Thursday at 4pm in the lounge.

v) CLOTHING: If you ordered geography clothing- it has arrived!! We will be holding office hours for pickup tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday from 12:30-2:30 in the lounge, and Thursday at the pizza party from 4pm onwards. There has been a small glitch in some of the orders, so please verify yours when you pick up.

vi) ACTION H2O: Are you interested in water issues? Do you want to be part of a focussed campaign team with a clear plan to tackle water conservation on the Island of Montreal? If you have time and enthusiasm why not join the Action H2O Montreal Campaign! This Sierra Club Canada / POLIS campaign aims to improve water conservation by working with municipalities and the City of Montreal to encourage strategic change, above and beyond individualistic actions. Even if you don't have time to spend on the campaign, you can help by showing your support in a number of ways:
The campaign is gathering momentum – we were on the radio on World Water Day. Listen to the interview at http://www.cbc.ca/homerun/2011/03/22/world-water-day/
Our public website: http://actionh2o.ca/
Our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ActionH2O/102870449748286 - please "like" us to show your support!
If you would like to get involved in delivering the campaign please contact Catherine catherine.hallmich@gmail.com (research) or Joanna at joanna.eyquem@gmail.com (partnerships/publication). We are most in need of people to assist with the research at the moment! Thank you!

That's it for now (don't forget to read the election blurbs below!)
Boogie woogie!

MUGS

---
AUS rep blurbs:

Malcolm Araos Egan:
My name is Malcolm and I want to be your next AUS representative! I'm a U1 student majoring in urban systems and minoring in political science. I find my joy in aimless walks around Montreal and looking at old maps. But I know you probably don't want to read a whole bunch of stuff about me, so just know that my goal as AUS rep is to deliver the clear voices of geographers to the faculty and to give our department its due weight in arts government. I aim to make sure that everyone in the department stays informed about any and all developments occurring within the faculty's government. As an opinionated and strong debater I believe I'm the natural fit for this position; you can trust me to fight hard to the issues important to you. Vote for me to effectively represent our department!

Stefan Chen:
Dear fellow Geographers, my name is Stefan Chen - Your candidate for AUS Representative. I'm a typical geography nut who has a passion for hiking, playing Pooh-sticks, geocaching & student welfare. Being the incumbent U1 Representative, I've acquired better understanding of student politics & needs of fellow Geographers like you. I believe, by becoming your AUS Representative, I'll be in better position to accomplish more & serve your interests better next year. As a participant of high-school trivia & debate club, I've developed invaluable skill of public speaking & tact. My working experience as a lifeguard has enabled me to develop an aptitude of excelling under pressure. I am a man of my word, dedication & action - I get things done before it needs to be done. I, Stefan Chen, will strive to uphold the grand tradition of Geography being the BEST department. To endless possibilities; vote for me to be your voice at AUS.

Scholarships still available.

vi) More summer opportunities! We have a vacancy for a super-cool internship working on tree-planting,
wildlife research and community outreach for three months in rural Uganda this summer (June
-August). This internship is located in a forest fragment surrounding a crater lake called
Kasenda, where a small population of the endangered red colobus monkey remains, along with
a wide variety of birds and other primates. The position involves working with locals to
expand the forest, tracking red colobus groups (with the possibility of subsequent collaboration
on research papers) and helping the nearby communities with grass-roots environmental
initiatives. There will be two interns going on this internship. They will be set up in a
safe environment by the Chapman lab group (Drs. Colin and Lauren Chapman of McGill) going
to work in Kibale National Park nearby and seen after by locals that have experience working
with previous interns. This is a volunteer position, but we have funds to subsidize much of
the flight costs (accommodation for the summer is free and food is very cheap). This position
needs to be filled as soon as possible, so if you are interested, please contact us immediately
and plan to come see us by Friday.

That's it for now!

Cheers,

Hello Geographers!

A few quick reminders and a couple of new events to take a look at:

i) Today is the last day of voting in the SSMU elections! If you haven't voted yet, go to
ovs.ssmu.mcgill.ca now. It only takes 2 minutes, so go give some input on our student gov-
ernment and where your money goes! Voting closes at 5:00pm, and the results will be
announced at 5:30pm in Gerts. If you have any questions please emailelections@ssmu.mcgill.ca

ii) Reminder that today is the last day to hand in nomination forms for MUGS next year! If
you want a last minute form today, drop by the lounge or email mcgillgeography@gmail.com

iii) Sugar shack next Friday March 18th!! We will be selling tickets to this great event all
next week in the lounge from 12:30 until 2:30. Tickets are $15 for geographers and $22
for non-geogs. This is an event you do NOT want to miss!

iv) Reminder that our annual Wine and Cheese is March 17th!! Join us next Thursday from 5:15 to
7:15 for some drinks, yummy food, and good company! Both students and Profs will be there,
all geographers are welcome!

v) Taken any sweet geography photos lately?? Our annual photo contest will be happening next
week! Whether you got a great shot from your backyard or a wicked pic from some far-away
place, submit it to the photo contest! Send your pic to mcgillgeography@gmail.com with a quick
title and where it was taken. Submissions are due by the end of next week (March 18th) and
then we will open up a voting period.

vi) Prof of the year: starting Monday we will have a ballot box in the lounge for you to submit
who you think is the best geography prof! Who has made class extra fun? Taken time to help
you with a difficult concept? Let them know they're appreciated! Submissions are due by
Friday March 18th.

vii) On a not-so-fun note, the lounge needs to be mentioned. This shared space for geographers
is pretty consistently left with people's garbage, leftover food, and dishes pilling
up. This is OUR shared space, and it's pretty embarrassing to have it so disgusting all the
time. Please pick up after yourselves guys, and if you see someone leaving stuff ask them
to clean up. Just a friendly warning that if we keep being left with piles of dirty dishes
to wash every week, there won't be any out to use anymore. Aright, make a change, people!

That's it for now! Enjoy your weekends!
