Hello my fellow Geographers!

check out these updates and great events coming up!

i) The first annual Geography vs Environment curling event was a huge success! A big
thank you to all who organized and came out to play! Environment won in the final
shoot out, but next time it will be oooours!

ii) Geography clothing is ready to rock! We have zip hoodies, pullover hoodies, tons of
t-shirts, and tote bags this year! Take a look at the pdf attached up top, and bring
your order form (also attached) to any member of our exec (Monday coffee and cookies
at 12:30 is a good bet for finding some). We will also be holding office hours TBA later
next week. If you have any more questions feel free to email mcgillgeography@gmail.com
The deadline for ordering is Feb 18th, so don't miss out on repping the best department
under the sun with some snazzy clothing!

iii) The next Geospectives is this coming Monday Jan 31st! At a special time (12:00-1:30), come
listen as Dr. Osvel Hinojosa-Huerta, Director of the Water and Wetlands Program in Pronatura
Noroeste, Mexico present "The demise and recovery of the Colorado River Delta, Mexico: lessons
for watershed management and wetland restoration". Refreshments will be served at 11:45.
Don't miss out!

iv) Geoassassins is back!! We are yet again playing the wonderfully scary department-wide
"assassins" game. You must tag your target without anyone seeing, and avoid being tagged
yourslef, trying to be the last one standing a the end! There will be terror. There will be
betrayal. There will be glory. To sing up: email geoassassins@gmail.com with your full name
and the email address you want to receive updates to. Deadline to enter the game is Feb 7th.

v) It's official- Geog movie nights are on! Starting next Thursday Feb 3rd, we will be showing
some sort of (maybe)geography-related movie every Thursday at 7pm in the lounge! This
promises to be tons of fun, and a great way to hang out with other geographers outside the
classroom or library. First movie TBA soon!

vi) Hey Geographers! We need as many of you as can come to come next: Tuesday Feb 1st, 10:30-11:00
to the MUGS lounge in order to meet a potential spousal hire (CV attached above). Especially anyone
who is interested in developmental geog/public health geog. If you know a geographer who is interested
in these subjects please invite them! This is a great opportunity for us as undergrads be more
involved in the hiring process and get to know who is teaching us!

Cheers,

MUGS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Geographers!

i) "Geospectives" is the interdisciplinary lecture series sponsored and hosted
by the Department of Geography. It is held in Burnside Hall, Room 426, on
select Mondays from 11.00-12.30. Geospectives starts back this semester,

TOMORROW, Monday January 17th! Dr. Kazue Takamura, from the centre for East
Asian Studies at McGill will be presenting "Ethnography at the border: Small-
scale Chines Traders in the East Coast of the Thai-Malaysian Borederland".
Students taking GEOG 310 will find this talk particularly interesting in
light of what Prof Turner will be talking about in her section!
Don't miss out on this great talk! For more info on geospectives, go to
http://geog.mcgill.ca/geospectives.html

ii) Check this out: McGill's first annual Sustainability Symposium will take place
on March 4th, 2011. We welcome faculty, students, alumni and the general
public to this all day event. The symposium will feature inspirational guest
speakers, a poster session for graduate and undergraduate students to showcase
current research or class projects, and a "world-cafe" discussion. The keynote
speaker for this event is Jonathan Foley, current director of the Institute on
the Environment at the University of Minnesota, whose work focuses on the complex
global environmental systems and their interactions with human societies .

The field of sustainability crosses all departmental lines, and we welcome a diversity
of approaches to sustainability. Graduate and undergraduate students in all faculties
and departments are encouraged to participate in the poster session. If your work
addresses any aspect of sustainability (environmental, economic, or social) on any
scale, this is a wonderful opportunity to share your research with other members of
the McGill community who share similar interests. There will be three $200 cash prizes
for poster winners.

Registration for the symposium is now open! To register for the event or to learn more
about us, please visit our website at www.mcgillsustainabilitysymposium.wordpress.com or
our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/McGill-Sustainability-Symposium/180604355287773.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at sustainability.symp@gmail.com.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Camille, Laura, Alex and Sarah (The MSS Team)

And there you are- more great ways to become involved and aware, geographers!

cheers,
