What: Guest lecture, "Neoliberalism: dead or alive?"
Who: Prof. Jamie Peck
When: Friday, January 23, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. (15h)
Where: Burnside Hall, room 1b45

You may have noticed from posters in Burnside, but tomorrow Prof. Jamie Peck from U.B.C. will be giving a lecture titled "Neoliberalism: dead or alive?". In the realm of political and economic geography, Prof. Peck is kind of a big deal, to say the least. He's the Canada Research Chair in Urban and Regional Political Economy, not to mention his long list of publications. If you're in urban systems or human geography (not to mention political science, economics, or sociology) you shouldn't miss this lecture.

Hope to see you there.

10:30:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

Here's a list of this week's MUGS news. To sign up for our weekly listserve, email us at mcgillgeography@gmail.com.

1. We're looking for a U2 Representative
2. Come to our Coffee & Cookies tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
3. Early reminder: keep your shutters peeled for our annual photo contest

We're looking for a new MUGS U2 Representative for the current semester (Winter 2009) to replace the previous representative who is no longer at McGill. The position includes participating in the Undergraduate Affairs Committee to review changes to curriculum in addition to working with MUGS to help plan and execute events. In order to be eligible for this position you must be a U2 student pursuing any program in Geography (arts, science, minor major, honours, urban, GIS, etc). Ideally you would also be available to attend our weekly meetings 9:30-10:00 am every Monday. If you are not eligible at that time, still apply, just include your course schedule so we can reschedule the meeting time. Please email back with your name, program, year, previous/current organization or campus experience and a one paragraph statement explaining your motivation to work with MUGS in this position. Applications are due Sunday, January 25 before the end of the day.

Just as a reminder, coffee and cookies will be starting again as usual tomorrow (Monday) and every following Monday at 12:30 in the MUGS lounge (Burnside 305).

Last, if any of you want to flaunt your photography skills, our annual photo contest will be held this semester. The deadline is March 27, so you still have a lot of time to snap the perfect shot. We accept hard copies or digital submissions, and entries can be submitted at coffee and cookies or to mcgillgeography@gmail.com.

The MUGS blog is back

6:29:00 pm McGill Undergraduate Geography Society 0 Comments

After fading into dormancy just over a year ago, we've decided to resuscitate the MUGS weblog. Here we'll post information about our news and events, as well as our own commentary on all things geographic.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, let us know at mcgillgeography@gmail.com. Or even better, come find us in person. We generally hover between the geography lounge and the Walter Hitchfield Geographic Information Centre (GIC) in Burnside Hall, and we're always happy to sit down and chat.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, MUGS is:

Co-Presidents:
Isaac Binkovitz and Janine Reitsma

Vice Presidents:
Brendan Rahman (Finance) and Tyler Kreider (Communications)

AUS and SUS Representatives:
Gaelan Love (AUS) and Michael Angelopoulos (SUS)

Class Representatives:
Katie Higgins (U3), Elizabeth McNamee (U1) and ChloƩ McMillan (U1)

Sustainability Coordinator:
David Mills

We'll post pictures next week in case you have no idea whose faces those names belong to.

In the meantime, good luck with your courses and try to stay warm.
