Apartment Crawl, GeoOlympiads

MUGS Annual Apartment Crawl
Friday, November 3rd
What is it?
Basically, it's one big party stretched over several apartments of Geography students over the course of the night. The theme this year is Continents! Every apartment will feature drinks/food/decorations of a specific culture found on each of the continents. For example, our Asian apartment will feature sushi and sake.

When is it?
Friday, November 3rd. Save the date! We'll be starting at the MUGS Lounge at 7pm with a pot-luck dinner. Bring your favorite dish to share with everyone. Drinks will be provided. At 8:30 or so, we'll move to the first apartment, and the party begins. A schedule of where we'll be, and when we'll be there, will be available in the MUGS Lounge by the early next week.

How much is it?
We'll be asking for everyone to contribute $10 to defray the costs. This involves food and drinks at each of the stops, as well as a bus ticket to reach some of the more exotic locations.

Shoot us an email at mcgillgeography@gmail.com with any questions. Hope to see some of you next Friday.

GEO-OLYMPIADS in MONTREAL
The GeoOlympiads are an annual competition between Geography students in universities all over Canada. This year, they are being held in Montreal (sponsored by UdeM). McGill is try to round up a team to represent us at the GeoOlympiads. It will be held the second weekend in January, 2007. Events include sports and trivia competitions, and festivities galore.
The registration fee is $100 per person, which includes all the activities for the weekend (and includes all activities and a hotel room - we're working on a reduced rate, as we don't need hotel rooms!). MUGS is willing to subsidize any students who are interested in representing us. Depending on how many people are interested, we can subsidize up to half of this cost.
If you are interested in representing McGill during this weekend, please let MUGS know by emailing us at mcgillgeography@gmail.com.

National Waste Reduction Week ? Oct 16th ? 22 nd

FAIR

Where: Tomlinson Hall, 475 Pine Ave West

When: Tuesday the 17th from 12 to 4

What: Check out local eco-artisans, enviro-sudent groups, NGOs, organic food vendors, and other kiosks.

WASTE AUDIT

To make waste issues tangible, we will carry out a comprehensive waste audit in the Shatner building. The objectives are to measure the volume and weight of the garbage, recyclables, and compost waste generated, and the amount of recoverable waste that is actually thrown out. Our findings will help us identify the sources of waste and the status of waste management for the SSMU.

You guessed it, we need your help! Participating in this waste audit is a great learning opportunity. You will get to work in a team with your fellow school-mates. We will provide a free meal n' music each day for our trusty volunteers. We will meet at Gert's on Tuesday Oct. 17 th and Thursday Oct. 19th at 5:30 for a prep meeting and follow through with the auditing.

Don't let this promising project go to waste without your help.

Email us your intents and availabilities now!

Depopulating the Russian North: Resettlement and the Pursuit of Economy in Chukotka
The Russian state is in the early stages of a massive project of social engineering, intended to create a more economically sustainable far north by settling much of the present migrant population to central regions of the country.  The Assisted Federal Migration scheme signals a fundamental shift from the Soviet model of permanent northern settlement to a new reliance on transient shift labour.  In the words of Russian planners, this is long overdue exercise to rid the north of "human debris" left over from the Soviet era.  Already supported by a World Bank loan of $70m, plans are in place to drain the far Russian northeast alone of 600,000 residents. But are planners correct to assume Russian settlers in the north will be receptive to resettlement?  And what are the consequences for indigenous people left behind in a newly depopulated north?  This presentation will draw on ethnographic research conducted in the far northeast region of Chukotka and communities of former northerners now resettled in central Russia to examine sources of resistance Russia now faces in "shrinking" its north.
